Group photo with all the drones at Ol Pejeta.

In July, we visited our Kenyan partners, Kenyatta University in Nairobi and Ol Pejeta Conservancy located in Laikipia County. The purpose of the trip was to investigate the practical and legal aspects of flying drones in Kenya and to conduct initial test flights in the conservancy. We brought 7 different drones with us, multi-rotor and fixed wings, and experimented with how to safely conduct drone operations from within a wildlife conservancy with lions, elephants, and more. We also met with students at Kenyatta University to discuss how we can succeed in conducting good and relevant research for the benefit of both the European and African stakeholders. We had an amazing time in Kenya and gained so much experience that will be valuable for planning our future “Kenya Hackathon” workshops.
