Transportation from Zürich to Konstanz
Many participants will fly to Zürich airport and have asked how to get to Konstanz.
This is our suggested guideline.
Purchasing train tickets
- Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.sbb.ch/en or near the train platforms when you arrive in Zurich (see below)
- You want a ticket from “Zurich Flughafen” to “Konstanz”. Below the departure/destination window, where it says “Price display” make sure you select “Full fare” from the drop-down menu.
- Trains depart at 0:16 and 0:46 each hour during daytime hours. The 0:46 are preferable because they are direct. Otherwise you will need to change 1-2 times.
- Click the time you want and then “Select tickets”
- On the next screen you will have the option of a “Point-to-point” ticket or a “Supersaver ticket”. The Supersaver is cheaper, but is only valid for the exact trip/time you have chosen. The “Point-to-point” ticket is valid for any time/route between the airport and Konstanz on that day. I almost always do the Point-to-point because you never know if your flight will be delayed, how long the immigration line will be, etc.
- Click continue and then you should be able to enter your information and pay.
Getting to the train from the International Arrivals (non-EU) area of the airport
- As you are leaving the International Arrivals baggage claim area in the Zurich airport there are signs to follow to get to the train, but briefly:
Leave the baggage claim and go outside and across the street into the shopping mall. - When you get into the mall, head toward the right and go down the escalator, where there are check-in desks for some of the airlines. Behind the escalator there are more escalators going down to the train platforms.
- Near the top of these escalators there are ticket machines from which you can buy your ticket if you do not have one already. Usually there is an attendant there who can help; pretty safe to assume they will speak English.
- Your train will leave from Platform 1/2. There are signs over the escalators indicating the next departures, so it should say “Konstanz” if you are within ~ 10 minutes of your departure and taking the direct train (leaving at 0:46).
- When the train arrives, the cars are marked near the door with a big 1 or 2, which indicates whether it’s a first or second class car (most will be second).
- If you are on the direct train, Konstanz is the terminus, so you don’t have to worry about missing your stop.
- Someone will likely come around and ask to see your ticket and probably also your passport/ID.
Your hotel should offer you a bus pass if you are paying the tourism tax – this is good for using the bus in Konstanz for the duration of your stay. You don’t have to show your pass when you get on the bus, only if someone comes around and asks for it.
